Our Heritage

From Prospect House to The Painswick

The rich history of our home mirrors the rise of the Cotswold wool trade and the architectural genius of the Arts & Crafts movement.

Late 18th Century

Prospect House is Built

A wealthy Cotswold clothier constructs an imposing Palladian mansion on the hillside, christening it "Prospect House" for its sweeping valley outlook.

Early 20th Century

The Vicarage & Detmar Blow

Reverend William Henry Seddon purchases the house as the village vicarage and enlists famed Arts & Crafts architect Detmar Blow to design the chapel wing, library, and exterior scallop stone.

The Secret Ingredient

A Worcestershire Sauce Inheritance

The church extension was generously funded by Rev. Seddon’s wife, heiress to the Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce fortune—inspiring the name of our acclaimed restaurant, Sauce.
